Acceptance Criteria and Process

Thank you for your interest in Turnbull School!

We welcome you to visit our school throughout the year and see it live! Please choose the option that you prefer:

Meet individually with the Registrar, Joyce Walker-Steed. Many parents choose to visit at a time suitable to them. Appointments can be scheduled during the day. As Joyce is in the office by 7:00 AM, she would be happy to accomodate an appointment before your work day begins. Please contact Joyce at
613-729-6099, ext. 212 or admissions@turnbull.ca.

Attend an Admissions Information Session. We offer morning sessions during the school year. An Admissions Information Session includes a slide show presentation from the Director and Principal, providing in-depth information to help you with your decision. This is followed by a tour of the school to see the classes in action. Upcoming events will be featured on our main page as soon as the dates are scheduled.

Admissions Process and Acceptance Criteria:

Applications are received throughout the year and successful candidates are offered placements on an ongoing basis once the following steps are completed.

1. Submit your completed application form, together with the following: one deposit cheque
(which, on acceptance, becomes the first tuition payment), a copy of your child's most recent report card and of any previous assessments (see paragraph #4).  If parents withdraw their application, a portion of the deposit is refundable depending on the stages already completed of the application/admissions process.

2. On receipt of the above, you will be given a confidential character reference form for one of your child's teachers to complete and return to us on his/her behalf.  The information will then be reviewed by the Admissions Committee, consisting of the Director, Mary Ann Turnbull, the Principal, Gareth Reid, and the Registrar, Joyce Walker-Steed.

3a. Junior Kindergarten candidates participate in one of our Junior Kindergarten Visit and Assessment Days.

3b. Senior Kindergarten to Grade 8 candidates participate in a day at Turnbull School with a class of their current grade.  For potential Grade 1 and Senior Kindergarten applicants, the school visit lasts half a day only, from 8:25 AM to approximately 12:00 Noon.

4. On successful completion of the above steps, an educational assessment will take place for students in Senior Kindergarten to Grade 8, to establish the student's academic achievement levels, preferred learning style, strengths and needs.  This determines whether the student’s academic and learning profile can be addressed at our school.  Should the student’s application be successful, it also enables the teachers to prepare a profile of his/her strengths and needs, so that our teachers are well prepared for and informed about the students entering their classes.  If an assessment, including a detailed educational evaluation, has been carried out in the past six months, the committee may be able to use this information to decide whether your child will be accepted.

5. Our Admissions Committee meets regularly as each step in the application process is completed, and a decision about acceptance will be made as soon as possible, based on the results of the above steps and the availability of openings in the school.  This decision will be communicated to you by a phone call from one of the committee members, followed by a letter.  If your child is accepted you will be sent the contract that should be signed and returned by the date indicated in your letter.  We will hold a place for your child once the signed contract and all post-dated cheques for school fees have been received by the Admissions Office.

If you have any questions, please call the Registrar, Joyce Walker-Steed, at
