What a positive impact Turnbull School has had on our daughter's life, and thereby ours! We are from Denmark, on a one year sabbatical leave. We chose Ottawa to be our place for expanding our horizon.

Being so many miles away, choosing a school for our daughter in Ottawa was not easy. The Danish Embassy in Ottawa recommended five or six schools, including Turnbull School. Reading Turnbull's homepage made the choice easier for us. We liked the fact that the school communicates frequently and well with parents. We were very happy to hear that all students have daily physical education classes at Turnbull, something our daughter didn't have in Denmark. We also liked the fact that there was a dress code, but not a uniform. To us, it signalled a modern yet professional atmosphere at the school.

I asked my relatives to visit the school, including my mother, who was visiting Ottawa. The welcome she got was memorable. My mother came home and told me that Turnbull School had a warm atmosphere, the students seemed very happy, and she was sure our daughter was going to enjoy this school.

We got the same warm welcome, and the same impression about the staff, teachers and students. Getting to know the school, we have really enjoyed the "caring for others" atmosphere, combined with the high academic standards. We are amazed how the atmosphere of caring is carried out in every corner of the school.

We brought a very quiet girl to Canada from Denmark. She did not like going to school at that time. She did not know very much English. She would never have stood in front of a class to speak before coming to Turnbull, she said to us. After half a year at Turnbull, we have a daughter who speaks English, performs on stage, speaks in class while looking peers in their eyes, is much more open, has much more self-confidence and loves to go to school! We, as parents, ask ourselves, how can that be? We think the key is the "caring for others" environment in every little corner of the school.

What we as parents also liked about the school was that the teachers are reasonably strict, encouraging the students to do their personal best. Therefore, the children learn a lot but still in a very caring way. Turnbull really is a place to grow.

What Turnbull has given our daughter socially and academically is a lifelong positive experience.

Very best regards,

I'd like to take this brief opportunity to thank you and your teaching/administrative staff for the job so well done in taking charge of our children's education over the past several years. Both girls have fared so well by attending Turnbull and we are grateful for your no nonsense approach to education, discipline, moral guidance and overall general outlook. ... Your approach has been one of thoughtful and meaningful education, and our girls have definitely benefitted from this and have learnt to recognize and develop their own directions. I can only hope that their future exposures can meet the high standards you've set.

Your teaching staff has had an extremely positive impact on our girls, their approach to learning and their character development. We are grateful for the role modeling they've provided, as it's so crucial at this time in a teen's development and important that children have teachers they can respect and approach for help and guidance.

Overall, it's been an exemplary experience and my only regret about discovering Turnbull was that we didn't explore it sooner.

“The two years our son has spent at Turnbull have been the best investment that we could have ever made.  During the past two years he has soared academically.  He has developed excellent learning strategies and is just a much more confident learner.”

The teachers always thoroughly explain everything that they teach us. If one of the students in the class doesn't understand the subject, the teacher puts the student's question in first priority before the actual lesson. If they don't have time in class to fully go over the material, and the student still needs help comprehending what they learned, then the teachers would give up their lunch time, grading time or free time to help the student fully understand the concepts. They leave no student behind in their train of learning.

I also enjoy how they acknowledge the many different talents in our student body. They give out awards for academic achievements, for music achievements and for sports achievements. There are many other achievements that they don't give out awards for, for example, volunteering. But the students who have high levels of volunteering hours still get recognized for their accomplishments.

The French program at Turnbull School has turned out to be one of the best French programs we have ever experienced in the educational system. By the end of my son's term at Turnbull, with just one year in the program, he was able to converse in simple conversation, understand written text as well as write paragraph essays with enthusiasm and without help of any sort of translator. He can now answer questions verbally in a variety of tenses, as well as write short stories in French. Being able to complete the Grade 9 curriculum in Grade 8 is a huge benefit. It has even given my son a great foundation and the confidence to succeed in Grade 9 where high school can be intimidating and a whole new world. Having this foundation and confidence to succeed dissipates through all the disciplines and is nothing other than good all around. Because of the knowledge and success my son had gained from the French program at Turnbull, he has done extremely well in Grade 9 and plans to continue on with French throughout his high school years. I commend all the French teachers at Turnbull. You should be proud!

This afternoon as I sat in my office at the Civic Site of TOH and watched over the Experimental Farm, I saw a mass of white shirts approach the school and couldn't help but gleam in pride knowing that my girls were out there somewhere participating in 'the donation walk'. This is a very important message that you've instilled in these children, knowing that they should be giving back to their community. Congratulations on your efforts and record fundraising amounts.

Your message is very powerful and greatly appreciated, and never overlooked.

It is very hard to believe that it is time for us to say good-bye to Turnbull. 8 years have gone by. We are very blessed and fortunate to have been able to provide our children with an education here. The values at Turnbull mirror ours ... respect, hard work, competitiveness and kindness to name a few. We are extremely proud of our children and recognize that their years in Turnbull have played a large part in shaping their characters, and in extending our family's values into their school experiences. We are so thankful to the many teachers and administrators who have made an impact on their lives and nurtured their growth with such genuine care.
