What a positive impact Turnbull School has had on our daughter's life, and thereby ours! We are from Denmark, on a one year sabbatical leave. We chose Ottawa to be our place for expanding our horizon.
Being so many miles away, choosing a school for our daughter in Ottawa was not easy. The Danish Embassy in Ottawa recommended five or six schools, including Turnbull School. Reading Turnbull's homepage made the choice easier for us. We liked the fact that the school communicates frequently and well with parents. We were very happy to hear that all students have daily physical education classes at Turnbull, something our daughter didn't have in Denmark. We also liked the fact that there was a dress code, but not a uniform. To us, it signalled a modern yet professional atmosphere at the school.
I asked my relatives to visit the school, including my mother, who was visiting Ottawa. The welcome she got was memorable. My mother came home and told me that Turnbull School had a warm atmosphere, the students seemed very happy, and she was sure our daughter was going to enjoy this school.
We got the same warm welcome, and the same impression about the staff, teachers and students. Getting to know the school, we have really enjoyed the "caring for others" atmosphere, combined with the high academic standards. We are amazed how the atmosphere of caring is carried out in every corner of the school.
We brought a very quiet girl to Canada from Denmark. She did not like going to school at that time. She did not know very much English. She would never have stood in front of a class to speak before coming to Turnbull, she said to us. After half a year at Turnbull, we have a daughter who speaks English, performs on stage, speaks in class while looking peers in their eyes, is much more open, has much more self-confidence and loves to go to school! We, as parents, ask ourselves, how can that be? We think the key is the "caring for others" environment in every little corner of the school.
What we as parents also liked about the school was that the teachers are reasonably strict, encouraging the students to do their personal best. Therefore, the children learn a lot but still in a very caring way. Turnbull really is a place to grow.
What Turnbull has given our daughter socially and academically is a lifelong positive experience.
Very best regards,
