This summer Turnbull Learning Centre is pleased to be a host location for these very popular science workshops. Each week offers a different hands-on, theme based program so students can participate for one or more weeks.

Mad Science delivers unique, hands-on science experiences for children that are as entertaining as they are educational. Mad Science sparks children's imagination and encourages scientific literacy in children in an age when science is as vital as reading, writing and arithmetic.

Peter Bazowski and Pamela Eastwood are the Ottawa owners of Mad Science and are on a mission to assist educators and parents in making science fun for kids. By bringing together education and entertainment, "edutainment", Mad Science whisks away the myth that you have to be "nerdy" to like science. Their mission is to spark the imagination and curiosity of children everywhere by providing them with fun, interactive, and educational activities that instill a clearer understanding of what science is really about and how it affects the world round them.

All Mad Science programs are taught by highly-trained professional instructors equipped with awe-inspiring gear. Children engage in exciting hands-on activities, watch spectacular demonstrations, participate in inquiry-based discussions and take home things that they have made themselves such as model rockets, periscopes, Mad Science putty and more. Mad Science offer children a chance to see just how cool science can be!

 

The following afternoon weekly themes each have a special finale on Fridays! Children will discover the science of how a fair treat is created....hmmmm? Fluffy, fresh and delicious cotton candy is made by the mad scientist for all to enjoy! They will also venture outdoors with Mad Science and experience the science behind a NASA rocket launch.

Each week there are approximately 15 take-home experiments given to each child.

Seeking Your Senses!
(week of July 7 or August 5)
Interactive, hands on and fun scientific experiments. Mix colours and learn about the color spectrum, make your very own Mad Science dough while learning about
mixing things together to create different products. Tantalize your taste buds while learning about your senses and get to make soda pop. Learn about
our body of bones and muscles and how they work together. Children will have a blast being introduced to hands-on, fun science!

NASA Academy of Future Space
(week of July 14 or August 25)
Explorers Mad Science and the Academy of Future Space Explorers takes children on a voyage of space discovery, from the atmosphere and beyond. Explore various technologies designed for outer space; experience the life
of an astronaut through space flight; probe the mysteries of meteors, planets and moons. It is an experience that is truly out of this world!

Moving with Science
(week of July 21 or August 11)
This week invites you to discover how things move with science. Take apart pellets to see what an owl cannot digest! View the world through a mad science periscope and kaleidoscope that you make yourself. Join a team of camper engineers and assemble and control simple machines and robotics! Make your own birdhouse, crystal gardens, wave modulators, and more!

Secret Agent Lab Camp
(week of July 28 or August 18)
Step into the shoes of a detective - uncover the science involved in evidence gathering and analysis, solving the crime by becoming a super sleuth. Figure out the science of forensics and become a super spy as you enter into spy academy. Make and take home Mad Science experiments from spynoculars and spyglasses to inspectakits and secret code breakers.
