We are finishing off our 2007-08 year with some further awards!

Canada Wide Science Fair: The two Turnbull students chosen by the Ottawa Regional Science Fair judges to represent Ottawa at the Canada Wide Science Fair have achieved outstanding results. Carolyn Kovesi, grade 8, won a Bronze medal and Jaye Mangione, grade 7, received an Honorary Mention. We were all very proud of their excellence in science!

The Canada Wide Science Fair organizing committee asked us to host the international students (high school age) for a day in our school. It was an honour to be chosen and to offer an enriching experience for them and our students. The Australian students participated in a "Sharing Solutions" morning with a group of our grade 8 students. Together they discussed issues and solutions on topics such as climate change, multiculturalism, human rights, aboriginal issues, and government in each country. They then shared what they had learned with grade 6, 7 and 8 students. Our grade 2 students had a presentation about Australia, which they are studying. In the afternoon the Australians were joined by students from Taiwan and Mexico to perform an enriching science lab activity - extracting DNA from wheat germ (an activity we do with our gr 8s each year) and a Photomontage workshop in the computer lab.

CIRA Award: CIRA Ontario, the provincial level of The Canadian Intramural Recreation Association, has presented Turnbull School with an Outstanding Intramural Achievement Award for offering a variety of activities that promote CIRA's motto of "Fun, Active Participation for All", They made special note of the use of our senior students in a leadership capacity within our lunch time Intramural programs.

CAHPRD Award: The Canadian Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance has again this year bestowed their highest level of achievement on our school, the "Diamond Award", for our athletic program.

Ottawa Hospital Foundation Award: In April, Turnbull students were given an "Inspiration Award" from the Ottawa Hospital for their ongoing commitment to supporting their neighbourhood hospital. Here is what Susan Doyle, President and CEO of The Ottawa Hospital Foundation, said about Turnbull School on presenting the award:

The Ottawa Hospital Foundation was delighted to name Turnbull School as
this year's recipient of our Inspiration Award. We believe that the
School, its students and staff were deserving of this special honour
because of the remarkable spirit, energy and commitment they have
demonstrated in supporting The Ottawa Hospital over the past decade.

The school's significant success in fundraising is due to the energy and
determination that goes into every School project and the teachers'
creative drive to make every project an opportunity for learning and
empowerment for their students.

It is inspiring to see the level of participation of these students in
the Turnbull School Race Weekend team; it is inspiring to see them
clearly enjoy every minute of the journey; it is inspiring to think of
the difference even young people can make in our community; and it is
inspiring to think of the impact these young people will have as leaders
of the next generation of Canadians.

Thank you to Mary Ann Turnbull, her colleagues on staff and all the
students who are making such contributions to healthcare and our
community.
